Alex Broad – Post Roar Hunting

May 01, 2014

Well, the roar never really eventuated for me.  Either too early, too late, too wet or too dry, I just couldn’t catch a break this year.  However the trail camera did a good job of securing some pretty cool footage, which Ill post a bit of as soon as get the couple of hundred videos sorted and edited.

Anyway, Anzac weekend came along and we needed to get back up to our spot to get some venison, the freezer was looking very neglected.  Furthermore, the one day we did manage to get stags roaring earlier this month, One of our hunting party managed to roar in and shoot a nice stag, which we never found, we tracked a solid blood trail for nearly 2kms, only to find a pool of blood and no deer.  So we were going back to sniff him out.

This was a wallow he had walked through about 1 km from where he was shot, and about 1 km before the trail was lost.  Absolutely gut wrenching not to find an animal that should be well and truly dead right there.

Unfortunately we couldn’t find the stag, but we did get lucky with a sneaky crop raider and managed to get some venison back in the freezer.   The farmer was very happy that there was one less animal eating his valuable crop and not paying his way…………..

Leading up to my trip to Fiordland this roar, I had been talking with the guys at Hunters Element HQ regarding the Odyssey Range of outer shell, waterproof gear.  I had never been a huge wearer of pants when hunting, more from what I was brought up with rather than for any practical reason.

I took a transfer from work in June 2015 which brought me from Greymouth to New Plymouth.  The work was an interesting change but I knew the hunting wasn't to be quite the same.
