A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of hosting our Spanish Distributor Antonio from Scandinavia Distribuciones y Logistica S.L to our office here in Wellington. We also organised a hunt down South to give Antonio a taste of our paradise. We jumped on a plane and headed down to Queenstown where we were greeted by our friend Richard from Glen Dene Station.

From Queenstown airport we enjoyed a scenic drive over to Glen Dene Station on the edge of the stunning Lake Hawea. We had a great evening with an amazing meal with Richard and Sarah Burdon. Steve Couper from Stealth Film joined us.

Antonio really wanted to shoot a good free range Bull Tahr so next morning Antonio, Dan, Steve and myself headed up the Dobson. We reached the hut, unpacked and had a bite to eat before a bit of glassing. We soon spotted a couple of good bulls tucked in a gut on the near face.

After lunch we climbed up above them and sidled over to get into a good position. We glanced over and the two bulls were nowhere to be found. Although we climbed higher to try and establish new angles on the area they had been holding in, unfortunately they had slipped away from us. Further up the gut we did locate a couple of new bulls, however we weren’t able to get to them in the dying light and backed out before night fall.

On the descent we took a look over the scree slope next to us. There were three bulls and one of them was pretty good. Antonio got into position and shot the best bull at just over 400m.

The bull was a ripper, 13”with 9.5” bases.

After a pile of photos Dan caped the animal out and we headed back to the hut for the night. After a bloody good night of eating well and drinking well we hit the sack.

The following morning we were up early and on the way back to Glen Dene to chase a free range stag.

A Fiordland Odyssey

Leading up to my trip to Fiordland this roar, I had been talking with the guys at Hunters Element HQ regarding the Odyssey Range of outer shell, waterproof gear.  I had never been a huge wearer of pants when hunting, more from what I was brought up with rather than for any practical reason.

I took a transfer from work in June 2015 which brought me from Greymouth to New Plymouth.  The work was an interesting change but I knew the hunting wasn't to be quite the same.
