First deer for the black powder rifle!

July 09, 2013

I have every intention of shooting a bull tahr with my Black Powder rifle this winter. As I prepare myself for a trip to the mountains I have been using my Black Powder rifle as much as possible, so when I was asked if I wanted to go look for a deer on the weekend, I naturally grabbed “The Beast”

The deer were hard to find at this time of the year. In an area where we usually see plenty, we wandered about for hours only spotting two groups of them in the bushes, They were all on the sunny faces and in thick cover near clearings that still had some feed on them.

I found myself 30 yards away from a mob of 6 deer…I lifted the rifle, picked out one unlucky deer and sent a 380gr projectile on it’s way. I had no idea what happened for a few moments though, the air was well polluted with a serious haze of smoke, but when it did clear… I had myself my first Black Powder killed deer.
