We pushed down through some handy bush, where I had been glassing the week before, this was Dave’s second visit all the way from Canada we were attempting to bow hunt a good Billy goat, one for the wall . Dave had hunted with us seven months prior, during that trip we hunted for a good goat but didn’t get lucky, his best was a 20 inch billy which he took with a very good shot off his knees.
We had parked the Honda high and decided to hunt down, this was the best option an easterly breeze was pushing up the valley, just a few days earlier I had been there glassing and seen a couple of good goats one black and one white both well worth a shot.
We found the goats they were mooching their way to cover from their breakfast feeding areas we now had the knowledge an ambush would give us a good shot option, the opportunity to wait for one to come to us, this is a great option when bow hunting especially as we were attempting to film this hunt.
Dave’s shot was lethal, 20 yards and had the added bonus of catching the action on camera, victory was sweet but there was nothing sweet about the smell of this guy, he stunk–one of the worst I have had the displeasure of …And you guessed it I had to skin the cape off him…Dave thought this was great me not trying to get my Hunters Element hunting gear all stunk up especially as we still had some hunting left to do…What I tried once I got home was certainly worth writing about, I put my Foxtrot boots, Contour pack, Hat, Prime Shirt and Hydrapel pants in the washing machine, the boots went in the pack and a small cup full of sports wash added, set it on heavy duty and what to you know it all dried on the line that night wearable the next day, one advantage to a warm January night…I did get in trouble with the wife but assured her it wouldn’t wreck the machine which it didn’t…Warning only attempt this with wife’s prior approval.
The Prime Summer top was great on this hunt, moisture removed from your body which keeps things from getting sticky and extra smelly, (the goat smelled bad enough) is a big advantage and being nice and light which is good in that 18–25 degree climate we hunted in, I have two tops in my favourite camo Veil..
