Hunting – Ballandean 11-12/08/12

August 13, 2012

This past weekend my partner Nick and I spent a couple of days out of the city hunting. We stayed at a property that I have hunted during the fallow rut with my family for the past 7 years. It was great to get out of town and back out into the bush, we had a lot of fun over the two days and it was a successful weekend with Nick harvesting two does for meat.

The jimny and I in one of my favourite valleys on the property

Nicks first doe of the trip, stalked across a large open field up to about 40 metres.

With a bit of 4 wheel driving we managed to get the jimny close enough for an easy retrieval.

Me skinning the doe, before we were shown that you actually only need 5 cuts and then pull the skin off.

The start of a very cold second morning hunt, carrying around my new long range camera lens.

Nicks second doe of the trip. This was an enjoyable stalk as we first saw the group of about 7 does at about 600m away and high on the hill. The wind was good and we were lucky enough to have several patches of small trees which provided good cover for the stalk.

Making good use of the jimny bull bar once again.

Here is a couple of shots i took of some bees and blossoms practicing with my new lens, getting it ready for more adventures.

Leading up to my trip to Fiordland this roar, I had been talking with the guys at Hunters Element HQ regarding the Odyssey Range of outer shell, waterproof gear.  I had never been a huge wearer of pants when hunting, more from what I was brought up with rather than for any practical reason.

I took a transfer from work in June 2015 which brought me from Greymouth to New Plymouth.  The work was an interesting change but I knew the hunting wasn't to be quite the same.
