Michael Gibson – Sambar Club Hunt

July 04, 2012

Last weekend I was lucky enough to hit the bush with our club and search out the elusive sambar stags. It was a wet forecast and it didn’t disappoint with good solid rains and light snow and hail at times.  The weather made the stalking quiet and cool but with the XTR Extreme Hunter jacket I was dry and comfortable all day.

It was a very successful hunt with all members sighting deer and 2 members getting their first sambar one being a stag.  I was lucky enough to spend a few days hunting with best mates and enjoyed being there to watch one of them take his first sambar deer and then his first stag in the following hunt. The resulting animals made for a nice steep carry outs to feed the camps meat supplies. We spent the first day hunting low and spent most the time playing catch up – following hot marks up the thick faces only to be bumping deer in their beds. The following day we started up high with a new strategy and it paid off with nice open face stalking with plenty of cover to catch those big brown ones out.

Late in the morning I heard a deer break down a gully to my left, I hurried over to see a hind trotting down the knob which was followed by a quality stag. I had the stag cross haired but didn’t drop the hammer as it would have been a hail Mary shot. I set the cross hairs on a hole that the hind run through hoping the stag would take the same path but unfortunately my last sight of it was trotting over the knob on another game trail. It certainly got the blood pumping and if I was just 15m to the left it could have been a different scenario.  I will certainly be having another look for that stag down the track.

The camp was a heap of fun and there was plenty of meat to share around, new hunters made some great mates, some high quality camp cooking was shared, laughs a plenty around a fire that never went out. I look forward to the next trip with the club as it was one that a few will never forget.

Leading up to my trip to Fiordland this roar, I had been talking with the guys at Hunters Element HQ regarding the Odyssey Range of outer shell, waterproof gear.  I had never been a huge wearer of pants when hunting, more from what I was brought up with rather than for any practical reason.

I took a transfer from work in June 2015 which brought me from Greymouth to New Plymouth.  The work was an interesting change but I knew the hunting wasn't to be quite the same.
