Sambar Backpack Hunt

October 16, 2013

With the summer months approaching at a rapid rate, a plan to get some sambar backpack hunts into the Victorian High Country was etched .  We planned on hunting some semi remote areas that were good for glassing and digiscoping whist still having plenty of surrounding bush cover for stalking and thick gullies to hold some elusive sambar stags.

We experienced all four seasons walking in with snow, hail, rain and wind greeting us as we headed to our remote camp. Spirits were high in the group and everyone was just chomping at the bit to set camp and start looking for a good stag to put a stalk in on.

The country was big and sightings were plentiful with approximately 40 deer spotted between us over the 4 days, no doubt a few double ups but a good population to get a fix of sambar. We had the best optics with us for this trip with 2 Swarovski  spotters an ATS 80mm HD and a STX 95mm HD doing the digiscoping and spotting. The scopes had Canon M and Sony Nex6 cameras attached for the photographic work through the scopes.

A few stags were spotted during the hunt but we were after a big boy on this hunt so only shots with the camera were taken.

Leading up to my trip to Fiordland this roar, I had been talking with the guys at Hunters Element HQ regarding the Odyssey Range of outer shell, waterproof gear.  I had never been a huge wearer of pants when hunting, more from what I was brought up with rather than for any practical reason.

I took a transfer from work in June 2015 which brought me from Greymouth to New Plymouth.  The work was an interesting change but I knew the hunting wasn't to be quite the same.
