Wilderness Tahr Hunt

June 14, 2013

At the start of the month we set off on our allocated week into our tahr wilderness block. We were greeted with what has become the usual and consistent west coast weather of hard rain, wind and then good dumps of snow. Once again this did not deter us and with good gear we set off each morning into quite average conditions to say the least.

Throughout the week we all managed bulls in the freezing conditions and had a great time doing it. I used a variety of hunters element layers during the week but the most important and one that never let me down was the XTR extreme hunter.

With some extra days we took on the local chamios and with a quiet start I ended up taking one on the second last day of our hunt. Once again the addictive New Zealand mountains fueled a ever growing passion for the animals that live there and Im already counting the days down to a return visit.

Leading up to my trip to Fiordland this roar, I had been talking with the guys at Hunters Element HQ regarding the Odyssey Range of outer shell, waterproof gear.  I had never been a huge wearer of pants when hunting, more from what I was brought up with rather than for any practical reason.

I took a transfer from work in June 2015 which brought me from Greymouth to New Plymouth.  The work was an interesting change but I knew the hunting wasn't to be quite the same.
