Duck season is coming and we’re all stoked! But things are likely to be a bit different this year. Because everything is happening later we will need to adapt. Not just to bird behaviour but to the weather conditions as well. The later season will likely mean colder and wetter conditions. We’ve built a gear guide to help you plan out a frozen season.
Additional warmth will probably be needed this year and the Core+ will offer some of that, but most importantly it will move the sweat away from your body once you settle down into shooting position after a hot session lugging decoys and gear. This will make a huge difference to keeping you dry and in-turn, warm throughout the shoot.
Adding a second mid layer to your clothing system will likely be key to a comfortable season. Another piece of fleece will work ok, but it will be bulky and bind under your jacket. An utra light insulated top will give you premium performance for size and weight. The streamlined Switchback jacket with top grade synthetic fill will be thrown on after you've set up your dec's and give you the needed extra warmth while still allowing you to fluently draw and swing your gun.
This late season means we're going to be dealing with bitter winds and sporadic rain. You simply cannot cope with a crappy rain coat. The Downpour Elite has been built tough for bashing through willows and shaped so you can swing those arms quickly without binding up. Callers are quickly reached in the concealed chest pocket and each of the lower pockets will happily house a box of shells.
The same principle applies here as with the Core+ Top discussed above, one added thing to note is that wet legs from wading through rivers and swamps will dry dramatically quicker with a premium quality legging.
Whether you’re staying painfully still for long periods of time, or on the move to-and-from spots, the Spurs are the most comfortable mid-layer pant with 4-way stretch fabric and excellent breathability. It's really important to have highly breathable bottom layers in cold, swampy conditions.
For those not wearing waders, a bloody good pair of waterproof pants will be essential this year. The Downpour Elite Trousers are going to fit and feel comfortable and go to work on keeping out the rain, sleet and driving wind.
A key piece to any duck hunters kit to provide face concealment. Your bare skin glows like a beacon to keen waterfowl eyes, especially late season. The Kayan provides concealment, warmth, and breathability.
Frozen mornings and evenings are on the way. Top quality insulated and waterproof gloves will keep your hands functioning during setup and between shooting.
Wear the Crux Fingerless Gloves underneath your warm Blizzard Gloves. These light gloves will allow you maximum dexterity and trigger control when it comes time to jump on the gun, while still concealing your bright skin.
It's basic but it's going to be absolutely essential. You need to keep your head warm in frozen conditions. The Pursuit Beanie is a fleece skull cap that will retain crucial heat in your top two inches and can be worn as camouflage or reversed to show blaze orange if you want to stand out when upland shooting.
Place the tape measure around the large part of your chest, usually just below the arm pits. Don't stretch the tape too tight. Align this measurement with the table below to help select your size. Outer layers are made larger to accommodate layers underneath.

Measure the circumference of calves at the thickest point. The size on the chart is the largest measurement that will fit in the gaiter. Gaiters can be tightened, but cannot be stretched to fit legs larger than the measurements shown on the chart.
