Daylight hours are long, the animals are fat, and there's no better time to have fresh backstraps ready for the BBQ. But the sun will sap your energy, climbing hills and carrying meat can get tough. So Summer layering is all about controlling sweat, resisting burn and being ready for different temperatures - and different sub-climates across the country - from day to night.
Our integrated layering system will see you right from cool mornings to hot summer afternoons so you can explore further and hunt longer.
Your summer layering system requires four standard layers. Even though you will probably spend most of your time in just the base layer, mornings can still be very cold, and anywhere alpine or wet will need the full set.
Your base layer should be light and fast drying; the cutting-edge super rapid wicking Eclipse V2 range is built for this, using our groundbreaking EvapoCOOLâ„¢ fabric technology to provide you revolutionary cooling comfort when the heat of the hunt gets brutal. Products like the Eclipse Singlet, Eclipse V2 Tee, Eclipse V2 Top or Eclipse V2 Vantage Hoodie are ideal. And for down below our Eclipse Pants offer ultra light full coverage with unbelievable breathability. Or, if shorts are more your jam, try Spur Shorts, or some Dobson Stubbies. For cooler days/spots add an additional Core base layer set.
Your mid layer top should be medium weight for this time of year. Although it won't get all-day use it's still needed for morning and evening. The Legacy Jacket or Zenith series are ideal. The Zenith is light, warm, tough and breathes well when the heat comes on. It utilises a 280gm RPET recycled polyester hard-faced, high wicking fleece for the main body, and a 205gm GRIDstretch, high-wicking, ultra breathable fleece for the underarms.
Spur Pants are perfect with those tops in variable summer conditions.
If you're up in the mountains or anywhere cold you'll need an insulation layer; something heat retaining and windproof like the Glacier or Sleet Jacket. Sleet is a waterproof puffer jacket made tough and light! It uses HYDRAFUSEâ„¢ Techlite membrane and outer layer, a premium raincoat outer shell, with a 100gm Primaloft Gold main body insulation and 80gm sleeve insulation. This combination ensures full protection from the elements. It packs down small and weighs nothing but will give you plenty of warmth for chilly alpine mornings.
Your outer waterproof layers won't see as much use in summer, but you have to carry them with the unpredictable nature of the New Zealand weather. The Halo and Storm jackets are so small and light that they'll disappear in the bottom of your pack but save your arse when needed. They both pack down incredibly small and weigh next to nothing but are also extremely waterproof and breathable.
And don't forget your footwear. Include the Prowl or Stealth Boot to complete your summer hunting kit. Both are lightweight Nylon, flexible and quiet. The Prowl is our premium stalking boot with a revolutionary knitted design. Built for the forest floor where weight and feel are paramount, it also performs extremely well in any hunting environment. Put these guys with some sweet Apex Socks made in New Zealand from our cutting-edge blend powered by Nuyarn® Merino. Nuyarn® manages moisture, odour and gives you plenty of cushioning. Happy feet = happy hunting.
