Supporting conversations that matter in the hunting community.
For many of us, the mountains are more than a place to hunt. They’re where we reset, reconnect, process life, and find perspective. Founded by Glen Thurston, Mental Hunts is a New Zealand charitable trust working to improve mental health and wellbeing within our hunting, rural, and firearms communities.
Their mission is simple but powerful: to change the conversation around mental health, reduce stigma, and provide education and support through real connection.
We’re proud to support the work Mental Hunts is doing, because sometimes, the best yarns happen on the side of a ridge, around a campfire, or walking out under a heavy pack with a good mate beside you.
Glen Thurston is a father, builder and passionate hunter. After seeking mental health support in 2019, he had his firearms licence revoked, highlighting how complex and misunderstood mental health can be within the hunting community.
Motivated by this experience, Glen founded Mental Hunts to challenge stigma, encourage open conversation, and advocate for change, within the legislation for firearms license holders and the hunting community.
Through his own lived experiences and unwavering dedication, Glen continues to challenge the idea that speaking up is a weakness, proving that asking for help should never come at the cost of losing the community you love.
Real hunts. Real stories. Real conversations.
Mental Hunts TV follows guests into the hills and creates space for stories that are raw, relatable, and deeply human. Keep up with Glen and the Mental Hunts crew as they continue to share conversations from the community, and resources for those who need them.
Looking after your mates starts with listening.
In hunting and rural communities, strength is often measured by resilience, self-reliance, and the ability to push through. But everyone carries something.
Mental Hunts is helping shift the culture by encouraging people to talk, listen, check in, and support each other before things get too heavy. Their work is grounded in the belief that the outdoors can be a powerful place for connection and that honest conversations can change lives.
Whether you’re a hunter, farmer, licence holder, parent, partner, or mate, this is a conversation worth being part of.
